BYD Sea Lion 06

2026-09-29 21:00:34

The BYD Sea Lion 06 is a mid-size SUV under BYD's Ocean Series, officially launched in July 2025. Positioned as a core contender in the RM100,000 to RM150,000 SUV segment, its "all-rounder hero" appeal propelled it to quickly become a key growth driver for BYD in the compact-to-mid-size SUV space post-launch.

Vehicle Overview

The Sea Lion 06 adopts the "Ocean Aesthetics" design language, featuring well-balanced body proportions and dynamic character lines.

Market Tags: All-round mid-size SUV, DM-i PHEV / EV dual powertrains, DiSus-C chassis, high value-for-money.

Product Highlights: The core edge of the Sea Lion 06 lies in its well-rounded specifications across the board. The DM-i plug-in hybrid variant features 5th-generation DM technology for exceptional fuel economy, whilst the EV variant is built on the e-Platform 3.0 Evo with efficient 800V high-voltage DC fast charging. Furthermore, the DiSus-C Intelligent Damping Body Control System, standard across all variants, delivers class-above ride comfort at this price point.

Market Positioning: With an official price tag ranging from RM129,900 to RM159,900, the SUV squarely targets the mainstream family market, taking on rival Japanese compact SUVs and other Chinese competitors through superior cabin packaging and advanced tech.

Development History

Background: Conceived to bolster the Ocean Series lineup and bridge the SUV gap between the Dolphin and Seal, BYD developed this mid-size SUV to cater to both daily urban commutes and long-distance road trips.

Key Milestones:

24 July 2025: The BYD Sea Lion 06 was officially launched, offered in both DM-i PHEV and EV pure electric guises.

October 2025: Within just 100 days of launch, the Sea Lion 06 hit the 100,000-unit production milestone, setting a record as the fastest vehicle across all segments to breach 100k units and establishing itself as a runaway success.

May 2026: The 2026 BYD Sea Lion 06 was officially unveiled, receiving comprehensive upgrades in driving range, ADAS capabilities, and smart cabin features.

Market Performance

Competitive Landscape: Thriving in a fiercely contested mid-size SUV market, the Sea Lion 06 maintained a steady monthly sales volume of around 30,000 units, anchored by its all-round strengths in efficiency, cabin space, and tech kit.

Owner Feedback: Owners have widely praised its generous cabin space (2,820 mm wheelbase) and the supple ride delivered by the DiSus-C system. On long-distance drives, the DM-i version’s combined range of over 1,600 km has effectively eliminated range anxiety for road trippers.

Core Technologies

Powertrain Architecture:

DM-i Variant: Powered by 5th-generation DM technology, fuel consumption in charge-depleted state is rated as low as 3.5 L/100 km (NEDC), with a combined cruising range of up to 1,845 km on a full tank and full charge.

EV Variant: Underpinned by the e-Platform 3.0 Evo with an 800V architecture, enabling rapid DC fast charging from 30% to 80% SoC in just 18 minutes.

Chassis & ADAS: Standard DiSus-C Intelligent Damping Body Control System across the range dynamically adapts suspension damping to road conditions, significantly improving vibration absorption and stability over rough surfaces. Additionally, the "God's Eye" advanced driver assistance system (spec-dependent) is standard across all variants, supporting City and Highway Navigation on Autopilot (CNOA/HNOA).

Active Safety: Debuts the Tyre Blowout Stability Control (TSC) system, engineered to keep the vehicle stable and composed during sudden high-speed tyre blowouts.

Smart Cockpit: Features the DiLink 100/150 Intelligent Cockpit System with full-scenario voice control, NFC digital key access, and 50W wireless smartphone fast charging for a seamless digital lifestyle.

Future Plans

As of June 2026, the key strategic roadmap for the Sea Lion 06 includes:

ADAS Rollout: Further refining the responsiveness of the "God's Eye" system via regular OTA software updates to broaden operational scenarios.

Charging Infrastructure: Leveraging BYD's charging and battery-swapping ecosystem to continually improve the on-the-road charging experience.

Product Refinement: Fine-tuning the thermal management strategies of the EV architecture based on real-world energy consumption and user feedback, ensuring peak reliability in all weather conditions.
